FAQs

We have gathered a few of the most commonly asked questions about Content Mapper. Have a look to see if one of them matches your question:

Q: Do I have to use the Information Mapping method if I want to use content Mapper?
A: No, not at all. Content Mapper can support any information architectures, such as the Information Mapping architecture or the DITA architecture, or even no architecture at all. However, the benefits of being able to reuse information components does require some sort of architecture that actually defines components. But, you do NOT have to use Information Mapping even though we do support the Formatting Solutions document type.

Q: Which Word versions are supported by Content Mapper?
A: From Word 2000 and forward: Word 2000, Word XP, Word 2003 (and we are planning to support Office 12 when this is launched). Word 97 could potentially be supported, but we have chosen not to do this as Microsoft has terminated support for the product.

Q:
Does Content Mapper support the DITA standard?
A: Yes, Content Mapper is currently being used by major companies that have chosen the DITA standard.

Q: Can Content Mapper handle many different document types?
A: Yes, a single installation can support many different types of documents, such as project reports, white papers, product documentation, operating procedures, laboratory practices, and SCORM compliant training materials.

Q: Do I have to be an XML expert to use Content Mapper?
A: No. In fact you do not have to know anything about XML to produce well-formed and valid XML content.

Q: What if my company's content management solution is not supported?
A: Call and talk to us about it. Content Mapper's unique architecture makes it possible to easily add support for more CMS solutions.

Q: Word (2003 and Office 12) can do XML. Why should we use Content Mapper?
A: For three reasons: 1) Word is an all-purpose tool and it generates all-purpose XML that is not targeted at reuse or at your selected standard. 2) Word does not offer you the deep integration with your preferred CMS solution(s) that Content Mapper does. 3) Word also has an all-purpose user interface that is not customized for reusable XML-based content creation at all.

Q: Will we have to buy new client computers to run Content Mapper?
A: No, if you can run Word on your computers, you can also run Content Mapper.

Q: Can we customize Content Mapper ourselves?
A: Yes, on a day-to-day basis, you can customize many Content Mapper features, such as metadata values, attributes, and toolbars. Implementing a completely new document type usually takes place in cooperation with us.

Q:
Is Content Mapper an XML editor?
A: No, it is not. Content Mapper does create and open XML files, but it effectively keeps all the intricacies of XML away from the author so that focus can remain on the content. XML editors, on the other hand, are specialist tools that show you the XML-structures you are working on.
